Obituary

Bruce L. Miller, age 83, of Brookings, died Friday, June 1, 2007, at the Brookings Hospital. Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at the Holy Life Tabernacle in Brookings, preceded by interment at Greenwood Cemetery at 10:00 A.M. Visitations will be from 4-7 P.M. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Bruce Linn Miller was born September 8,1923, at Grove City, Pennsylvania, to Ward and Flora (Linn) Miller. He graduated from Brookings High School and then attended South Dakota State College. He interrupted his studies at SDSC to pursue work as a junior physicist on a government war research project at the University of Iowa, which was followed by two years of military service. During this period, he completed an advanced course in electrical engineering at Rutgers University. He received a B.S. degree in physics and mathematics at SDSC in 1947. He entered graduate school at the University of Kansas and fulfilled the requirements for a M.S. and Ph.D. degree, in physics. Dr. Miller entered the research field with the Sandia Corporation in New Mexico. His research was concerned with damage assessment from nuclear detonations. In 1958, he was offered a full-time teaching position in the physics department at SDSC, a position he held until his retirement in 1988. After retirement, he tutored university and high school students. He was named a Professor Emeritus in physics, and in 1999 received a Distinguished Engineer award. On June 26, 1948, Bruce married Marian E. Risch at Brookings. She died May 31, 1990. Bruce was a faithful member of the Holy Life Tabernacle, and was a strong supporter of missions and helping orphans and unborn children. He enjoyed music, playing the cello and drums. He was an avid runner, bicyclist, and walker, and also enjoyed gardening and the birds. Survivors include a daughter, Lynette Lyn (Tim) Page of Watertown, South Dakota; a son, Steve (Janice) Miller of Tumwater, Washington; ten grandchildren: Bryan, Lindsie, Brittany, Emily, Sarah, Alissa, Brian, Kirsten, Josh, and James; two great-grandchildren, Chicha and Drew; and a great-great-grandson, Josh. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
