Bruce R. Begalka, age 78, of Brookings, died Saturday, August 2, 2008, at the White Healthcare Center in White, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at Our Savior Ev. Lutheran Church in Brookings, with interment and military rites at Hillcrest Cemetery at Estelline, South Dakota. Visitations will be from 4:30 to 7:30 P.M. Monday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Bruce Robert Begalka was born May 12, 1930, at Clear Lake, South Dakota, the eldest son of Louie and Jessie Elisa (Vought) Begalka. He was baptized into the Christian faith shortly after birth at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church in Hidewood Township, Deuel County, South Dakolta. He was confirmed at St. Johns Ev. Lutheran Church at Dempster, South Dakota. He grew up on farms in Deuel County. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On August 19, 1956, Bruce married Bonnie Jean Kasdorf. Their marriage was blessed with four children. Bruce was employed on farms in the Midwest area. He was employed by Hamlin County, worked as a carpenter, was football equipment manager at SDSU, and worked for McCrory Gardens at SDSU. He was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Begalka, of Brookings; four children: Allen (Bev) Begalka of Volga, South Dakota, James (Mary) Begalka of Brookings, Janet (James) Fitzgerald of Watertown, South Dakota, and Barbara (Craig) Mogler of Brookings; twelve grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a brother, Rev. Delbert (Caroline) Begalka, of Mankato, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lowell; a grandson, Jimmy Fitzgerald; and a daughter and granddaughter in infancy.
