Obituary

Bradly Quin Stevens, also known as "Trapper", was born September 9, 1956, to Wayne and Nancy (Muhr) Stevens at Bridgeport, Nebraska. He passed from this life on December 11, 2023, at Brookings, South Dakota.

Brad graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1974 where he enjoyed participating in cross country. Soon after, he married Gale Maxcy and to this union was graced with two beautiful girls. Later in life he was blessed with Vanilla, whom he affectionately called, and we would all come to know and love as "Punkin".

Following in his dad's footsteps, Brad learned early on to appreciate the outdoors and what it had to offer. Hunting, fishing and trapping became a love and talent that lasted his entire life. He was happiest in nature. He preferred being alone in nature and was often heard to say, "I was born 100 years too late".  Trapper taught many local young men the art of trapping and processing furbearers as well hunting with the use of hounds. As he was taught by his dad, Brad also became a lifelong experienced "Hounds Man" having trained and hunted with greyhounds, wolfhounds, coon hounds and later prize-winning mountain lion hounds.

He wrote stories about his experiences of fishing, hunting and trapping. Several of his stories were published in Fur, Fish, and Game magazine as well as Outdoor Life.

In Wyoming, Trapper guided many hunting trips, some on horseback, for avid hunters from all over the country. He also helped many Wyoming ranchers with predator control to protect their livestock while being contracted with the Wyoming Wildlife Management.

Brad designed and built mountain lion box calls that he provided to the Wyoming Wildlife Management so they could capture, tag and track the animals. Ranchers also used the mountain lion call boxes to protect their livestock from predators.

Brad worked many years for Burlington Northern Railroad and Herzog that allowed him to travel to various places in the USA and Canada.  He later drove a bus for the elderly, competed in a Bus Rodeo where he placed, and then drove bus for preschoolers. They called him Mr. Bus Driver and he enjoyed singing songs with them.

Brad was always very proud of his daughters and the beautiful young women they became. He will be missed:

Dayshun's deep appreciation for nature stems from the influence of her father. In the front yard, she spent countless hours perfecting her casting skills with a practice lure under her dad's watchful guidance. She cherishes the many canoe trips on the river where she spent hours learning the safety of proper canoe use, seating, paddling and reading the water. The river became a backdrop for lots of fishing and numerous campfires, where he taught her how to prepare the best willow branches to roast marshmallows in the warm glow.

Taylor's "PAPA ", Brad, imparted his wisdom of hunting, firearms, and all things outdoors to her father, Chuck (whom he called Doodle). After the loss of Chuck's own dad, Brad became a cherished father figure to him. Together with Chuck, they passed on the art of ethical hunting to Taylor. At the tender age of 12, Taylor, under their guidance, successfully harvested her first deer with one clean shot at the distance of 200 yards achieving a Boone and Crocket score of 199 6/8s on an impressive 8x9 point buck that was featured in Cabella's own "Outfitters" magazine. Brad's legacy lives on as Chuck and Taylor eagerly anticipate passing down this cherished tradition to the 5th generation.

Vanilla values the fishing trips to the lakes he took her on, teaching her how to cast, reel and catch a big one! He threw her birthday and holiday parties, making it extra special just for them. She really favored how above and beyond he went to make her childhood magical.

Brad is survived by his daughters: Dayshun (Kevin) Felling; Katrina Stevens; Vanilla Stevens.

Granddaughter: Taylor Rae Shultz.

Sisters: Crystal Stevens-Smith; Cheryl Stevens Hays; Melody (Todd) Franklin; Melinda (Rollie) Peters.

Gale (Maxcy) Stevens (former wife) and Marissa Young (very special friend).  Numerous nieces and nephews.
