Beulah R. Shaw, age 95, of Brookings, died Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Memorial services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, preceded by interment in Greenwood Cemetery at 1:00 P.M. Visitations will be from 4-7 P.M. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Home. The family requests that memorials be directed to missions.
Beulah Rosalie (Nelson) Shaw was born May 13, 1913, in Brookings County to Carl and Edna (Bower) Nelson. She was raised in Trenton Township, graduated from Brookings High School, and received a teaching certificate from Eastern Normal School in Madison. She taught elementary school in Brookings County for seven years.
On May 27, 1939, Beulah married Franklin B. Shaw in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Following World War II, the Shaws lived in Sioux Falls and then on their farm near Brookings. Beulah was employed by Medary Acres Greenhouse and Flower Shop, where she was able to enjoy her passion for gardening and horticulture. Franklin died August 14, 2008.
Beulah was a member of the Brookings Wesleyan Church and the Petal Pals Garden Club. She was a Sunday School teacher and 4-H Club leader. She enjoyed doing handwork, cross-stitching, bird watching, rock hunting, traveling, and knitting sweaters for missions. With her passion for gardening, Beulah provided flowers for church for many years.
Survivors include her two daughters: Diane (Robert) Murphy of Omaha, Nebraska, and Karen (Dan) Gust of Longmont, Colorado; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Curtis Nelson, of Brookings. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Alvin Nelson; and a sister, Mildred Hill.
