Betty (Hayter) Telkamp, age 98, of Brookings, died Monday, February 20, 2017, at the Neighborhoods at Brookview. Funeral services are 1:30 P.M. Saturday, February 25, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be 5-7 P.M. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Home with sharing of memories at 6:30 P.M.
Betty was born January 11, 1919, in Artesian, SD, to McPherson and Maude (Stearns) Hayter. In 1929, Betty's family moved to Brookings, SD. She graduated from Brookings High School in 1936, and South Dakota State College in 1940, with a degree in Home Economics. Betty married Albert Telkamp in January of 1950 at Arlington, SD. Albert and Betty moved to a farm north of Colman, SD in 1953, with their two young sons, Keith and Doug. She taught Home Economics in Mitchell, Brookings, Rutland and Flandreau, SD. Betty was a much respected teacher and a favorite placement for student teachers in the Home Economics Program at SDSU. She was South Dakota Home Economics Teacher of the Year in 1975. She was also involved with Phi Upsilon Omicron and Order of the Eastern Star. Betty retired in 1978, she and Albert spent the winters in Mercedes, TX, where they enjoyed square dancing and exploring the Rio Grande Valley. They were active members of the Ring Neck Winnies Winnebago Club and loved their weekend campouts with that group and yearly travels to the Winnebago Summer Rally in Forest City, Iowa. Betty and Albert moved to Brookings, SD, in 1987. After Albert's death in 1992, Betty continued to winter in Texas until 2006. She enjoyed golfing, china painting and tours to Europe and Australia. Betty's favorite moments were those shared with her family.
Betty is survived by her son, Doug (Teresa) of Colman; grandchildren: Emily (Skip) Studenski and sons Austin, Gavin & Grady of Sioux Falls, Kate Telkamp of Sioux Falls, and Brian (Emily) Telkamp and son Jack of Volga; step-grandchildren, Gary Telkamp, Sharon Johnson, Janelle Hearnen, Marsha Balsley, Linda Terry, Rob Telkamp, Mark Telkamp, Lee Telkamp, Scott Telkamp, Betty McKellar, and Chris Telkamp; daughters-in-law, Ethel Telkamp of Rapid City, Darlene Telkamp of Spearfish; and nephew, Richard (Barb) Hayter of Manhattan, KS.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Albert; son Keith; brother, Ken Hayter; and stepsons Norman (Mildred), Jack and Ray Telkamp.
Memorials can be sent to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
