Bert A. Den Otter, age 98, of Volga, died Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Graveside services with military rites will be held 1:30 P.M. Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Trinity Cemetery at Volga. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga.

Bert Arie Den Otter was born February 24, 1911, at Volga, South Dakota, to John and Nettie (Hillestad) Den Otter. He graduated from Volga High School in 1931. On July 3, 1942, he married Florence M. Sluter at Chamberlain, South Dakota. Bert served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1943. He worked for the Volga Hospital, Volga Hatchery, Art Leite, Burt Dahl, and the Farmers Co-op, until retiring at age 68. Florence died May 26, 1990.

Bert was a member of First Lutheran Church in Volga, and he belonged to the Burrows-Young American Legion Post No. 114 for 65 years. He enjoyed drawing, carpentry, and mowing.

Survivors include his three children: Diane (David) Rankin of Volga, South Dakota, Doug (Marilyn) Den Otter of Worthing, South Dakota, and Greg (Kathy) Den Otter of Humboldt, South Dakota; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gerrit (Viola) Den Otter, of Clear Lake, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers, Milford, Herbert, and Clayton; and an infant brother, Gordon.
