Obituary

Bernice Patrick, age 87, of Brookings, formerly of White, died Monday, July 16, 2012, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, July 20, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in White, with interment in Fairview Cemetery. Visitations will precede services at the church, beginning at 9:00 A.M. Bernice Josie (McKeever) Patrick was born May 26, 1925, near Humboldt, South Dakota, to John Charles and Martha Jorgena (Nielsen) McKeever. She attended country schools through the eighth grade and graduated from Montrose High School in 1943. On January 8, 1954, she married Stanley A. Patrick at Luverne, Minnesota. After their marriage, the Patricks moved to a farm near White in Lake Hendricks Township. They lived there for nine years, and in 1963 they moved to a farm on the east edge of Oak Lake. They moved into White in 1978. Bernice worked for the local newspaper from 1979 until 2005, serving as editor of the Tri-City Star for 13 of those years. Stanley died April 16, 2008. Bernice lived at Greenleaf Assisted Living from 2006 until her final illness. Bernice was a member of the United Methodist Church in White. She served as a 4-H leader in Brookings County from 1965 until 1975. She had extensive vegetable and flower gardens, and was an excellent cook and baker. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include a son, Verlyn Fodness of Sioux Falls; five daughters: Linda (Jim) Peters of Sioux Falls, Lynette Swindle of Brookings, Debby Otten of Hendricks, and twins, Darla (Doyle) Hicks of Brookings and Diane (Harlan) Best of Sioux Falls; step-children: Don (Mim) Patrick of Ottertail, Minnesota, and Darlene (Bob) Bailey of Luverne, Minnesota; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Hazel Kortleever of Luverne, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters: Lily Ordal and Marcella McKeever; a step-daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Bud Knutson; twin infant grandchildren; a grandson, Allen Patrick; and a great-granddaughter, Kayla Knutson.
