Obituary

Bernice E. Lenander, age 92, of Brookings, died Sunday, February 1, 2015, at The Neighborhoods at Brookview. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, February 6, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings with burial in Woodlake Cemetery, rural Astoria, SD. Visitation will be held prior to service, beginning at 9:30 am. Bernice Evangeline (Texley) Lenander, was born January 15, 1923, to Louis and Hilda (Casberg) Texley in Toronto, South Dakota. She attended Roosevelt School in Deuel County, South Dakota. Bernice married Otto E. Lenander on October 11, 1942, at Toronto, and to this union three children were born, Richard, David, and Lorna. Otto passed away on December 5, 1975. Bernice and Otto farmed in the Toronto area until 1972 and moved into town shortly after. She was the custodian of Leganger Church at Toronto and a clerk at Ensberg-Falken Market at Toronto. Bernice also spent 11 years with Sara-Marriott at South Dakota State University at Brookings, South Dakota, and as a Satellite Super for ICAP for 14 years. Bernice was a Sunday school teacher, vacation bible school teacher, Ladies Aid member, and Senior Citizens member, and Sermon Text Group member, all at Leganger Lutheran Church in Toronto. When Bernice moved to Brookings, she became a member of First Lutheran Church. Her hobbies included crocheting, puzzles, arts and crafts, reading, and completing crossword puzzles. Bernice is survived by her three children; Richard (Lois) Lenander of Sioux Falls, SD, David (Marcene) Lenander of Brookings, SD, and Lorna (Mark) Foster of Brookings, SD; six grandchildren: Jason, Judd, Anissa, Monica, Michael, and Nicole; twelve great-grandchildren and brother, Edwin (Ardyth) Texley of Pipestone, Minnesota. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Otto; her parents; an infant grandson; brothers, William, Harvey, and infant brother Harvey and three sisters, Margaret Hansen, Doris Bakke, and Rosie Tordoff. The family asks that memorials be directed to First Lutheran Radio Broadcast.
