Ben H. Meyer, 89, died Thursday, March 15, 2012, in his home in Volga, South Dakota with his family at his side. Services will be conducted at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, March 19, 2012, at Christian Reformed Church in Volga. Visitations will be from 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Gideons Bibles and Prison Ministry. Ben Henry Meyer was born on March 20, 1922, to Marinus and Fanny (Groen) Meyer in Volga, South Dakota. He grew up in Volga where he attended grade school and high school. He was self employed as a farmer on the same farm where he grew up. On January 27, 1942, he was married to Gertrude A. Schonewill at her parents' home. Ben was a member of The Christian Reformed Church for 70 years, Prison Ministry, Christian School Board, Gideons, and the Church Council. He enjoyed his horses and family gatherings. He especially enjoyed celebrating his and his wife's 70th wedding anniversary. He was a friend to many and always made a point to visit with the elderly and the sick. Ben is survived by his wife, Gertrude of Volga, South Dakota; seven children: Gloria (Pete) Tjoelker of Tyler, Texas, Ben (Judy) Meyer of Marne, Michigan, Marcella Denman of Tyler, Texas, Linda (Larry) Vostad of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Barb (Warren) Wiese of Ortonville, Minnesota, Steven Meyer of Volga, South Dakota, Faye (Ray) Weidenfeller of Ada, Michigan; 42 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and a brother Ed (Wilma) Meyer. He was preceded in death by a son, Dale Meyer, his parents, two sisters: Dena Mans and Hilda Starkenburg, and two brothers, Henry Meyer and George Meyer.
