Belva M. Stone, age 91, of Brookings, died Sunday, October 5, 2003, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, October 9, 2003, at Bethel Baptist Church in Brookings with interment at Fairlawn Cemetery in Aurora. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Home and preceding services at the church on Thursday. Belva Melvina (Hallem) Stone was born November 7, 1911, at Renner, South Dakota, to Jonas and Christine (Aasen) Hallem. She attended school at Roslyn. On June 11, 1931, she married Vaun L. Stone at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They lived in the Brookings-Aurora area. Vaun died in February of 1983. Belva gave sewing lessons and was an active and willing volunteer throughout her life. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and studied the Bible faithfully. She enjoyed crocheting and gardening. She resided at the United Retirement Center since January 2001. Survivors include her daughter, Dolly Ponto, of Elkton, South Dakota; four grandchildren: Pam (Gene) Judd, Susan (Jim) Baumberger, Cheryl (Jim) Stacey, and Mike (Lori) Ponto; nine great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law, granddaughter, three brothers, and a sister.
