Obituary

Belle L. Vick died Saturday, August 29, 2009, at age 97, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at Lake Campbell Lutheran Church, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Monday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Lake Campbell Lutheran Church, Attn: Judie Hilmoe, 21928 465th Avenue, Volga, SD 57071.

Belle L. (Wallen) Vick was born November 8, 1911, the younger of two children born to Silas and Ellen (Reeves) Wallen. Belle attended elementary school in District #76 north of Volga. During the summer, when she was 8-years-old, she started to take piano lessons and was the church organist all during high school. Belle walked 1 miles to attend Volga High School. After high school, she attended Northern State Teachers College for two years and then returned to the Volga area where she taught in Oslo #98. It was during this time that she met Ernest Vick at the Lake Campbell Roller Rink. They were married in 1934 and farmed west of Lake Campbell. Belle was a loving mother to two daughters: Bertha Ellen Madtson of Red Wing, MN, and Judith (Richard) Hilmoe of Volga, SD. As a farm wife, Belle was also active in the church as pianist, Sunday School teacher and superintendent, as well as a 4-H leader.

When the girls were grown, Belle returned to college earning her bachelors degree in 1968. She taught in rural schools for six years and then taught in Brookings until she retired in 1976. At age 65, she learned to ride a bicycle and remained active in many activitiesbowling, exercise programs, genealogy, quilting, tatting, church circle, reading, crossword puzzles, and the mission project of rolling bandages.

Survivors include daughters: Bertha Madtson of Red Wing, Minnesota, and Judith (Richard) Hilmoe of Volga, South Dakota; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Ernest died in February 2009. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brother, Warren; a son-in-law, Donald Madtson; and a great-granddaughter, Ann Marie Madtson.
