Obituary

Barbara L. MacDonald, age 64, died Sunday, August 2, 2009, at her home in Volga, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, August 10, 2009, at First Lutheran Church in Volga, with interment at 10:30 A.M. (MDT) Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at Black Hills National Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
Barbara Lee (Olson) MacDonald was born May 6, 1945, at Tyler, Minnesota, to Lester Olin and Opal Barbara (Rupp) Olson. She lived with her family at Ruthton, Minnesota, until the first grade when they moved to a farm near Gary, South Dakota. Barb graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1963 and then joined the U.S. Air Force, where she served as an air traffic controller. On September 19, 1964, she married Thomas MacDonald in Colorado. They were divorced in 1980.
Barb was discharged from the Air Force in 1965. She worked for 3M for 23 years. She was an active homemaker, served as a Girl Scout leader and den mother, and coached softball. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, gardening, camping, and doing various activities outdoors. Barb was fun-loving, always had a smile for whomever she met, and loved pink flamingos.

Survivors include her two children: Lori L. Schulte of Wentworth, South Dakota, and Thomas H. (Rhea) MacDonald of Volga; four grandchildren: Nicholas Gascoigne, Jasmine Sundet, Bethany Schaffstall, and Cullen Mac Donald; and seven brothers and sisters: Larry (Kathy) Olson of Astoria, South Dakota, Sandra (Ron) Bauman of Hendricks, Minnesota, Lyle (Jeanne) Olson of Belle Vista, Arkansas, Mona (Larry) Landmark of White, South Dakota, Wanda (Jeff) Muckey of Brookings, Laura (Doug) Eidsness of Brookings, and Lee (Teresa) Olson of Gary, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her parents Lester and Opal Olson, and brother, Leslie Olson.
