Barbara J. Howey, age 74, of White, South Dakota, died Thursday, March 31, 2016, at her residence in White. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings with burial at First Lutheran Cemetery in Brookings. Visitations will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings.

Barbara was born on October 28, 1941, in Mitchell, SD, the daughter of Ingvald and Lorrayne (Thorne) Johnson. In March of 1945, she moved with her family to Sioux Falls, SD, and received her education at Hawthorne Elementary and was a graduate of Washington High School in 1959. She was united in marriage to Lyle M. Howey, Jr. on June 6, 1959, at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD. Barbara was employed at various places in Brookings including Larson Manufacturing, Dakota Inn, Inter Lakes Community Action, and Brookings County Extension.

Barb was a member of First Lutheran Church in Brookings, served on the Senior Citizens Board, and was a City Council Member in White. She was also a major contributor to helping start the Special Education Class in Brookings. Barb enjoyed reading, traveling to Spring Dale, Arkansas, and Yellowstone National Park. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Lyle of White; her children, Lyle III (Dawn), Victoria (Richard) Tirrel, Robert, Richard (Kay), and Kristine (Julien) Gambs; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; special niece, Sandra Mechels and several other nieces and nephews.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Donald (Don) and Delaine (DeDe) Johnson; and one sister, Betty Nesheim.
