IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Barb
Egeberg
July 2, 1944 – February 25, 2020
Barb Egeberg, formerly of Volga, passed away on February 25, 2020, at The Neighborhoods at Brookview at the age of 75. Funeral services are planned for Saturday, February 29, 2020, at the First Lutheran Church in Volga, beginning at 10:30 A.M. Interment will immediately follow the service at the First Lutheran Cemetery in Volga. A time of visitation will be held the evening prior, Friday, February 28, 2020, at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga, South Dakota, from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M.
Barb Egeberg was born on July 2, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois to Bertram and Alice Johnson. She and her family moved to Madison, South Dakota, where she graduated from Madison High School in 1962. On July 3rd, 1962, she married Donald Egeberg in Pipestone, Minnesota. The couple resided in Madison until moving to Volga. Barb was very active in teaching Sunday School at the First Lutheran Church in Volga, was the leader for Girl Scouts for several years, as well as Boy Scouts. She was also active in 4H and the Sioux Valley Saddle Club. Not to be forgotten was the "taxi driver" position she held, bringing her children and their friends anywhere they needed to or wanted to go. It was not uncommon for there to be five to seven kids in a single cab pickup, waiting to go to Brookings for a swim.
Barb always put her family first, and although they did not have a lot growing up, her kids would have never known it. In the early 90's, the family moved to an acreage near Badger, South Dakota. Barb was always busy with her big garden on the acreage. The family had some sheep there, and she was always happy to oversee the bottle lambs. Don was a sheep shearer, and Barb took many calls every day lining up sheep that needed to be sheared.
Barb greatly enjoyed spending time with family. Her girls learned to drive going to Madison on the back roads to see Grandma and Grandpa Johnson to play cards or to go asparagus hunting...where Barb was once left in the ditch (this was the one and only time that that happened!) She also liked to knit, crochet, and make scrap material squares into quilts. She went to many of the local craft shows to sell her rugs that she made from small polyester squares with heavy drape material for the backing. Barb also worked at Dakota Sun in Volga and babysat.
In 2011, she moved to The Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings where she was the resident back scratcher and prankster. She used to hide a squirt gun under her blanket and take a shot at the staff when they would enter her room. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, and going on outings like the rodeo when it was in town. Barb truly enjoyed having fun.
Barb is survived by her daughters: Linda (Tim) VanMaanen, Patti (Randy) Novak, and Cheryl Egeberg; son, Brian Egeberg; her grandchildren: Sarah (Dan) Rooney, Ryan Novak, Riley Novak, Jodi VanMaanen, and Tanner Wulf; four sisters, and 2 brothers.
She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother, and a grandson.
Barb's family would like to extend a special thank you to all of the wonderful staff at The Neighborhoods for taking such great care of their mom all of these years. She truly liked you all.
