Obituary

Avis C. Nelson, age 75, of Volga, died Friday, April 22, 2005, at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, April 25, 2005, at First Lutheran Church in Volga, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-8 P.M. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Memorials may be directed to the First Lutheran Church building fund. Avis Christine (Dybdahl) Nelson was born December 10, 1929, at Volga, South Dakota, to Melvin O. and Gyda A. (Tonsager) Dybdahl. She attended country school at District No. 78 and graduated from Volga High School in 1947. She worked at the Gambles Warehouse in Sioux Falls from 1947 until 1949. On March 19, 1949, she married Dale E. Nelson at Volga. Avis worked at the Staurolite Inn in Brookings from 1972 until 1973 and at the V Store in Volga from 1973 until 1979. She was employed at the Coast to Coast store in Brookings and at Lyles Foodland Store in Volga until her retirement. Avis was a member of First Lutheran Church in Volga, the Women of the E.L.C.A., and the church quilters. She served as president of the Volga Jaycettes and was a member of the A to Z Extension Club and the Red Hat Society. Her special interests included quilting, sewing, reading, traveling, growing houseplants, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Dale, of Volga; six children: David (Lynette) Nelson of Volga, Debra Koch of Sioux Falls, Jon (Linda) Nelson of Brookings, Jane Nelson of Volga, Timothy (Nancy) Nelson of Bruce, and Terri (Jim) Van Erem of Brookings; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers: Vernon (Marlys) Dybdahl of Tyler, Minnesota, and Ralph (Gail) Dybdahl of Salem, South Dakota; and a sister, Ila Blanchard, of Monticello, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Dale Anthony; three brothers: Jerome, Myron, and Rolland; and a son-in-law, Gene Koch.
