Obituary

Avis Lorraine (Twedt) Leite peacefully passed from earth to heaven on September 10, 2019, just 13 days shy of her 93 rd birthday.  Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, September 14, 2019, at First Lutheran Church in Volga with burial to follow in the church cemetery.  Visitations will be 4-7 P.M. Friday, September 13 th at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga.

Avis was born to Edward and Ella Twedt of Oslo Township on September 23, 1926. She was one of 17 children born to Edward and Ella.  Avis was baptized and confirmed in the Oslo Lutheran Church.  Avis became ill with rheumatic fever as a teenager and missed much of her sophomore year at Volga High School. Rather than re-enter high school, Avis went to work to help support the family.  One of her first jobs was baking pies for an eating establishment in Volga.

Later on, Avis worked as a mother's helper for Marvin and Ruth Leite after the birth of their second child. Marvin and Ruth each credited themselves with being responsible for introducing Avis to Hartman, sending them off in the pick-up to get parts for farm machinery in Watertown.  Avis and Hartman were wed on February 5, 1949.  They lived on the Knute Leite farmstead west of Volga and raised beef cattle, hogs, and chickens as well as corn and small grain.  They had four children – Jane, Joan, Craig, and Melanie.

Avis was a member of a number of social clubs including Perfect Hour Coffee Club, A to Z Extension Club, Township Community Club, Church Circles and Ladies' Aid, and American Legion Auxiliary. She and Hartman were members of First Lutheran Church in Volga where they served in many ways.  On the farm, she enjoyed baking – which all visitors and family members also enjoyed.  Family favorites were her lefse, sand bakkels, and chocolate chippers.  Her cooking was also loved by family – her Swedish meatballs can still not be duplicated.  Avis grew lots of vegetables and flowers, especially enjoying her peonies and roses.  She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Avis was reunited in heaven with her husband, Hartman, and daughter, Jane, and many other friends and family. She is survived by her daughter, Joan Becker, and her husband, Paul; granddaughter, Emily Wong, and her husband, Eliot, and son, Ford; granddaughter, Kate Nguyen, and her husband, Jim, and daughter, Brooklyn; her son, Craig Leite, and his wife, Marsha; granddaughter, Mallory Leite; grandson, Tyson Leite, and his wife, Nikki, and son, Jackson; her daughter, Melanie Leite-Carroll, and husband, Paul; granddaughter Julia Carroll; granddaughter, Karissa Leite; son-in-law, Paul DeBoer; her sister, Ruth Larson; her sister Joyce Bunker; her sister Ione Hotchkin; her brother, Darwin Twedt; and many extended family members.
