Arthur R. Walker, age 91, of Brookings, died Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, April 21, 2006, at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church in White, with interment in Fairview Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5:00 to 7:30 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Art was born November 12, 1914, in Lyon County, Iowa, to Enno and Dora (Reiter) Kruse. His father died in 1918, and his mother married Jacob Walker. In 1920 Art moved with his parents to a farm near White in Afton Township. He attended country school at Afton District No. 12. On June 7, 1940, Art married Inez Johnson at Hendricks, Minnesota. He farmed near White and did carpentry work part-time. Inez died February 14, 1982. Art was an active member of Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, holding various church offices. He was also a member of the White Community Club. He enjoyed playing cards, dancing, bowling, and throwing darts. As a young man, he excelled in baseball, and played for several area teams. Survivors include two daughters: Verdell Beste (fiance, Gary Barber) of Willmar, Minnesota, and Vickie (Bruce) Newman of Brookings; a son, Darryl (Karen) Walker, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a son-in-law, Roger Schaffer, of Marshall, Minnesota; seven grandchildren: Alicia Beste and her husband Jason Zehnder, Travis Beste, Devon Beste, Jackson Newman, Logan Newman, Alexa Walker, and Kade Walker; four sisters: Margaret (Merlin) Haber of Brookings, Elvera Holtorf of Colman, South Dakota, Marilyn Skogstad of Sioux Falls, and Neva Jean (Stanley) Corlett of Brookings; a brother, Vernon (Rita) Walker, of Flandreau, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Sandra Kay Schaffer; three brothers; and three sisters.
