He attended country school through 8th grade. Later the family moved east of Aurora when Art and his brother Ray farmed after their father retired.
Art was united in marriage to Alice Van Beek on March 15, 1955 in Volga, and to this union three children were born: Richard, Rebecca and Roger.
The couple made their first home in Bushnell, and later moved to a farm near Castlewood. In 1967 the family settled on a farm southwest of Volga. Art was a faithful dairy farmer who took pride in the reward of a hard days work on the farm. He continued to help his son on the farm after they moved to Volga in 1988. Arthur and Alice were active members of the Bemis and Volga Christian Reformed Churches, where he was an elder and deacon. They enjoyed singing hymns, attending church activities, and spending time with family, especially their children and grandchildren.
Alice suffered a stroke in 1986. Arthur was a very devoted and loving husband, who faithfully cared for Alice at home for over 20 years, until she passed away on March 10, 2008, at United Living Community.
Arthur moved to Dakota Sun in 2011, and later moved to United Living community in 2012. Arthur enjoyed being at United Living community, and the staff grew to love him during the five and half years he was there. Art especially enjoyed visits from the preschool children.
