Arnold S. Matson, age 80, died Sunday, June 17, 2007, at his home in Volga, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, June 21, 2007, at First Lutheran Church in Volga, with interment and military graveside rites at First Lutheran Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Wednesday at the Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Arnold Sigfred Matson was born May 18, 1927, at Garretson, South Dakota, to Guy and Martha (Grodeland) Matson. He attended country school through the eighth grade in Minnesota. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, from October 1945 until January 1947. On September 17, 1948, he married Lorraine A. Husby at Sinai, South Dakota. They farmed for about 20 years, and Arnie worked for Land O Lakes Dairy in Volga for 28 years, retiring in 1992. He also worked part-time for Lyles Food Store, and he had recently retired as the custodian at the Volga Christian School. Lorraine died August 15, 1992. Arnie was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Burrows-Young American Legion Post No. 114. He was a member of the Sons of Norway, and was often asked to cook for their lutefisk dinners. He delivered meals on wheels and volunteered to help with 60-plus activities. He enjoyed walking, playing cards, gardening and working with the soil, and making coffee at the Gas Stop. He was a great dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who enjoyed his family to the very end. Survivors include his six children: Loretta (David) Greni of Beulah, North Dakota, Lowell (Ardis) Matson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Loren (Teresa) Matson of Delmont, South Dakota, Steve (Beth) Matson of Sioux Falls, Shirley (Joe) Hauge of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Scott (Jan) Matson of Volga; eleven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Bert Madtson of Red Wing, Minnesota, and Milly Madtson of Jasper, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Lorraines brothers and sisters: Harold (Avis) Husby, Mavis Quam, Evy (George) Casper, Jewel (Mylis) Husby, Donna Lange, Clair Husby, and Joyce Arndt. Arnie was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and siblings: Cora, Gundval, Clarence, Trygve, Melvin, Otto, Anne, Donald, and Martha.
