Obituary

Ardis Elenkiwich, age 91, of Brookings, died Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at the Neighborhoods at Brookview. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 17, 2015, at GracePoint Wesleyan Church in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Ardis Kyleen (Squires) Elenkiwich was born September 12, 1923, in Akron, Iowa to Kyle and Grace (Reinecke) Squires. She grew up on her parent's family farm at Alcester, Iowa, the second of eight children. During her younger years, Ardis was involved in many musical pursuits. After graduating from high school she attended Morningside College. After graduation she taught at the Morningside Conservatory of Music in Sioux City, IA where she met John Elenkiwich, a struggling accordionist. Under her guidance he became a proficient accordionist. They married on March 18, 1945, and moved to Brandt, SD. They farmed from 1945 to 1980, where they had a Guernsey Dairy and grain operation. They later traded the dairy cattle for a large scale poultry operation. During this time they raised six children and she taught piano, guitar, and violin. She was also the music director at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake. After 35 years of helping on the farm and running her household, Ardis and John retired in 1980 and moved to Brookings. They joined the Brookings Wesleyan Church. Ardis moved into Stoneybrook in 2007 after a slight stroke and resided there until her recent illness. While at Stoneybrook Ardis continued to teach piano lessons and tutor students up until she was hospitalized in November of 2014 Ardis is survived by her four sons: Kyle (Sandra) of Flandreau, SD, Lyle (Donna) Hudson, WI, David (Sue) Edina, MN, Alan (Kathy) Brookings, SD; one daughter: Lesa (Jeff) Svennes, Brandon, SD; one son-in-law: Ken Fideler, Volga, SD; 16 grandchildren, 8 great- grandchildren; one sister: Anita Hansen (Marv); two brothers: Thurston (Shirley) Squires, Lyle Squires; one sister-in-law, Frances Squires. She was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, one daughter, JoAnn, one sister, and three brothers.
