Obituary

Anne Arnold Trump, 95, died Sunday, January 11, 2004 at the Brookings Hospital. There will be a memorial service on Friday January 16 at 11:00A.M. at St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Brookings, the Reverend Marcia Hunter officiating. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Eidsness Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Anna Harris Arnold was born February 16, 1908, in Wilmington, NC to Jacob Hiram and Bertha (Harris) Arnold. She grew up in Washington, D.C. until the death of her father in 1921. She and her mother and sister moved to Northfield, MN where Anne attended high school. From 1923-1925 they lived in Salonika, Greece, where her sister taught English at a boys school. She returned to the US and attended Oberlin College in Oberlin, OH where she was graduated Phi Beta Kappa with an AB in history and Latin in 1929. After earning a MA degree in history at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, she worked as a cataloging assistant at Johns Hopkins University Library in Baltimore, MD from 1932-1935. On August 22, 1935, she married Alfred George Trump, Jr. The couple moved to Lansing, MI where she again worked as a cataloging assistant at the Michigan State Library in 1936 before starting their family in 1937. After World War II, the family moved to Virginia, MN from 1946 1948, and then to Brookings in November 1948. In Brookings, Anne was an active member of the St. Pauls Episcopal Church, participating in St. Annes Guild, Altar Guild and teaching Sunday school among other activities. From 1960 through 1986 she was Assistant Librarian at the Brookings Public Library with reference and interlibrary loan responsibilities. She developed a special interest in South Dakota history and was a member of the Brookings County committee for the South Dakota State Centennial in 1989. She was also part of the Brookings Historical Committee that established the Brookings historical districts and was an advocate and supporter of the South Dakota Memorial Art Center. She was a member of the Brookings Womens Club for over 50 years and also belonged to the SDSU Faculty Womens Club, the South Dakota Library Association and the Brookings chapter of the South Dakota Retired Teachers Association. Anne is survived by her children, Michael (Norma) Trump of Cloverdale, CA, Peter (Maria) Trump of Cherry Hill, NJ, Jeane (Bertrand) Gautier of Marana, AZ, Andrew Trump of Fargo, ND, her nephew, George (Lydia) Von der Muhll of Santa Cruz, CA, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Brookings Area Habitat for Humanity, PO Box 412, Brookings, SD 57006.
