Obituary

Alvin Schultz, age 88, of White, died Sunday, August 30, 2015, at the Hendricks Nursing Home. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at the United Methodist Church of White, with interment in Fairview Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Alvin Schultz was born June 25, 1927, at White, South Dakota, to John and Jennie (Franken) Schultz. He attended rural school and graduated from White Public School in 1946. While in high school he worked for Horning's Dairy and also at the White Co-op Creamery. In April of 1947 he enrolled in a dairy short course at SDSU which lead to his being employed at the Farmer's Co-op Creamery in Canton, South Dakota, as a licensed butter maker until 1951. From 1951 to 1955 he worked for Gamble Skogmo in Milbank. In 1955 he became a clerk and later deputy in the Brookings County Auditor's office. He was elected Brookings County Auditor in 1958, retiring in January 1991. On July 27, 1958, Alvin married Jacquelyn Simmons at the Methodist Church in White. Alvin was a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, Washington Masonic Lodge No. 111 of White, Brookings Elks Lodge No. 1490, White Community Club, White City Council, and the South Dakota and National Quarter Horse Associations. He served as president of the South Dakota Association of County Officials in 1978. He was a Past Master of Washington Lodge No. 111; president, secretary, and treasurer of Oddfellows; secretary and treasurer of the South Dakota Quarter Horse Futurity; president of the Brookings Riding Club; director of UMC church choirs and cantatas; soloist for many church services and funerals; a member of many church committees; and church board chairman and treasurer. Alvin enjoyed trail riding and showing quarter horses, fishing, bowling, golfing, dancing, singing, roller skating, playing cards, cruises and traveling, volunteering, and wintering in Arizona. He was gentle, caring, witty, with a sparkle in his eye and an infectious smile. Because of Parkinson's he was a resident of the White Care Center from November 2011 until July 2015 when he moved to the Hendricks Nursing Home. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jacquelyn; nieces: Maxine (Richard) Christianson, Nancy (John) Popowski, Donna (Larry) Miller, and Carol McLaughlin; many great-nieces and great-nephews; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Skrovig. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Grace; brothers: Edward, Matthew, Floyd, and Donald; sister-in-law, Dorothy Schultz; and brothers-in-law: Donovan Skrovig and Harold Bahr.
