Obituary

Alvin P. Schmidt, age 84, of White, died Monday, June 10, 2013, at the White Healthcare Center in White. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 14, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in White, with interment and military graveside rites at Fairview Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in White, with a public masonic service at 7:00 p.m. Alvin Paul Schmidt was born December 5, 1928, at Algona, Iowa, to Arnold and Gladys (Hawkins) Schmidt. He grew up near Algona and attended Lone Rock country school there. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 until 1957. On May 14, 1959, he married Geraldine Van Beek at the Little Brown Church in the Vale at Nashua, Iowa. They resided on a farm northwest of Bruce until 1963 when they moved to a farm in Afton Township southwest of White. Alvin was a member of the United Methodist Church in White, where he served as a trustee. He served as a 4-H leader and as a member of the Afton Township Board. As a veteran, he served as commander of Higgins-Jessen American Legion Post No. 88, Brookings County American Legion commander, and as president of the Brookings County Veterans Memorial committee. He was active in masonry as a member of Washington Lodge No. 111 of White, White Eastern Star Chapter No. 16, Brookings York Rite bodies, and El Riad Shrine Temple in Sioux Falls; he served as a District Master and as Tiler of the Grand Lodge of South Dakota. Survivors include his wife, Gerry, of White; a daughter, Teresa (Myron) Pomrenke, of White; three sons: Paul (Jane) Schmidt of Brookings, Brian (Cindy) Schmidt of White, and Wayne (Sara) Schmidt of White; a daughter-in-law, Cathy Schmidt of White; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four sisters: Naomi Nelson of Brandon, Pat Brooks of Shelton, Washington, Elisie Ahern of Shelton, Kitty Warwick of Summerville, South Carolina; two brothers: Arnold Schmidt, Jr. of Sioux Falls , and Dean Schmidt of Arlington, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Carol Schmidt and Mildred Kesterson, and a son, Keith.
