Obituary

Aline F. Rich, age 96, of Brookings, died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, March 7, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will precede services at the church beginning at 9:30 A.M.

Aline F. (Antoine) Rich was born September 1, 1912, in Moody County, South Dakota, to Albert and Minnie Mae (Oakes) Antoine. After her fathers death, the family moved to Sioux Falls and later returned to Flandreau where Aline graduated from high school. She graduated with a two year Advanced Degree in Education in 1932. She was elected to the Kappa Sigma Iota honorary fraternity in 1932, and remained active in the fraternity throughout her teaching career. Aline earned her B.S. Degree in Elementary Education from Northern State College in 1939. She took additional education at General Beadle State Teachers College, SDSU, Mankato State, and the University of Northern Iowa. Throughout her career she kept current by attending college courses, workshops and in-services.

Following graduation from Eastern Normal, Aline got a job teaching in White Lake, South Dakota. On June 9, 1938, she married R. Milton Rich in Brookings. During Alines 28 year teaching career she taught many grade levels in the communities of Parker, Colman, Rutland, Madison, and Brookings.

Aline was a member of First United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Women and the CARE group. She was a member of P.E.O., the Association of Childhood Education, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Sigma Iota, and the Brookings Retired Teachers Association, and she served on many professional committees.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Aline Petersen and her husband Jerry of Rapid City, South Dakota; a son, David Milton Rich of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a granddaughter, Heather Aline (Daniel) Petersen; and two great-granddaughters, Alexa Aline and Julia Lee. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998, a brother, and four sisters.
