Obituary

Alice Susie (Mans) Volkers was born December 20, 1923, on the family farm six miles west and one mile south of Volga in Bangor Township, to Mitchell H. and Ida (Piebenga) Mans. She was welcomed into her heavenly home on Sunday, November 17, 2013. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, November 25, 2013, at the Volga Christian Reformed Church, with interment in Trinity Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Sunday, November 24, at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Memorials may be directed to the Volga Christian School. Alice grew up in the Volga area, attending country schools. After graduating from the eighth grade, she worked for various families. She worked at the Volga Hospital for many years. On February 1, 1945, she was united in marriage to Herman Volkers at Volga. "Hermie" died on July 18, 1994. After retiring from the farm and moving into Volga, Alice began working at the Sioux Valley lunchroom where she became known as "Grandma" to many of the students. She was Ivan the Cossack in 1988. Alice was a long-time member of the Christian Reformed Church of Volga, and was a faithful ladies' aid member where she held various offices. She was a Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed going to the neighborhood birthday parties as well as attending Coffee Party. She was ready for a good cup of coffee and fellowship at any time. As a farm wife, Alice appreciated and enjoyed all of God's creation. She especially enjoyed going to the grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's music and sports activities. Survivors include two daughters: Sally (Lawrence) Vander Wal of Bruce, and Susan Vander Wal of Bruce; a son, Gene (Brenda) Volkers, of Volga; a daughter-in-law, Marla Volkers, of Volga; ten grandchildren: Kent, Dean, Paul, Kelly, and Jeff Vander Wal, Londa Nwadike, Melanie Pool, Roxanne Paulsen, Rachel Guthmiller, and Jennifer Volkers; great-grandchildren: Ethan, Baillie, Carter, Lindsey, Michaela, Riley, Kaitlyn, Dayton, Mariah, Alicia, Preston, Sadie and Mitchell Vander Wal, Nisa and Michael Nwadike, Rebekah, Brady, and Corey Pool, and Trent, Kylie, and Karsten Guthmiller; a sister, Esther Meyer, of Lynden, Washington; sisters-in-law, Mildred Mans of Holland, Michigan, and Henrietta Volkers of Volga; and a brother-in-law, Mike Zuiderhof, of Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son Bob; son-in-law, Dale Vander Wal; grandson Benjamin Volkers; brothers Bill, Hank, and Mitchell Junior Mans; and sisters Betty Vander Wal, Rose Kallemeyn, and Julia Zuiderhof.
