She grew up in Kingsbury and Brookings Counties and received her education in Brookings County Schools. She worked for the College Extension Department. On November 10, 1934, she married Edwin Nelson Cunningham at White, South Dakota. They farmed in Aurora Township and the SDSU farm before moving into Brookings where she was employed by the Brookings Hospital. In 1954 they moved to Preston Township and farmed before moving back to Brookings, as Ed was appointed sheriff and Alice became the jailer. Following retirement they continued to live in the Brookings area. After Ed died in 1992, Alice moved to an apartment. Since the summer of 2007 she has lived with her daughter Marlys and husband.
Alice was a longtime member of Morningside Community Church, where in her early years she sang in the choir. She was not one to complain and could always find the good side of things. Her family meant so much to her.
