Obituary

Albert W. Kranzler, age 95, of Brookings, died Saturday, March 24, 2012, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 27, at First Presbyterian Church in Brookings. Memorials should be directed to the Carol Kranzler Shield Scholarship at SDSU or First Presbyterian Church. Albert Wilhelm Kranzler was born July 11, 1916, at Bismarck, North Dakota, to Christoph and Karolina (Engel) Kranzler. He grew up in Lehr, North Dakota, one of ten children. He graduated from high school in Ashley, received a bachelor's degree from the University of North Dakota, and a master's degree from the University of Minnesota. He also attended the University of Kansas, Marquette University, the University of California in Santa Barbara, and Arizona State. Al taught high school for seven years in schools in North and South Dakota and Colorado. During World War II, he taught Air Force personnel in Sioux Falls for two years. He taught at SDSU for 42 years, retiring as professor in 1988. He was the acting head of the mathematics department from 1961 until 1967 and again in 1980. He was an instructor for the National Science Foundation for seven years. On June 2, 1939, Al married Ruth Klein at Cathay, North Dakota. She died in 2006. Al was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Men's Brotherhood and choir. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Kiwanis, the American Mathematics Society, the Mathematical Association, and Mathematics Club. He enjoyed music and singing, golf, tennis, gardening, travel, fishing, camping, reading, and woodworking. Survivors include his son, Stan Kranzler and wife Carolyn, of Camarillo, California; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Carol Lou Shield; five brothers, Jake, John, Walter, Theodore, and Henry; and four sisters: Amelia, Mary, Hertha, and Otillia.
