Obituary

Adele Bebensee, age 96, of Elkton, died Monday, August 22, 2011, at Cozy Corner Assisted Living, Inc. in Elkton, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, August 26, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Elkton, with interment in Elkton City Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-7 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness - Zink Funeral Chapel in Elkton. Adele Mary (Hammer) Bebensee was born January 24, 1915, at New England, North Dakota, to Ivan W. and Eleanor E. (Warner) Hammer. She moved with her parents to Mellette, South Dakota, at age five, where she lived until age twelve when they moved back to Elkton, South Dakota. From October 1934 until November 1, 1943 she lived in Colton, South Dakota and then moved back to Elkton. She attended Brentford Consolidated School, then to various country schools in Spink and Brown counties, and then Elkton Public School. On June 11, 1932, she married Roy Frederick Bebensee, Sr. at Brookings, South Dakota. The couple lived near Colton until 1943 when they moved to Elkton. Roy passed away February 2, 1990. Adele was a member of First Baptist Church in Elkton where she served as deaconess and Sunday School secretary. She belonged to Mission Circle. Adele was also a member of the Farmers Union where she served as secretary for several years. She loved crocheting, sewing, reading, and her flower garden. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Survivors include her three daughters: Mardella (George) Buchenau, Dorothy (Ralph) Harvey, and Marjorie (Arthur) VanderWaal, all of Brookings, South Dakota; one son Roy F. "Sam" "Butch" (Jessie) Bebesee, Jr., of Elkton, South Dakota; a son-in-law, Martin (Barb) Bosch of Brookings; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Floyd Hammer, of New Jersey; and one sister, Lillian Ponto, of Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents: Ivan and Eleanor; her husband, Roy Sr.; a daughter, Eleanor; one great-granddaughter; one great-great grandson; two sisters; two brothers; and two half-brothers.
